This beautiful Emerald/Auburn/Olive/Silver/Black granite is a Reclaimed
resource of the once mighty Calumet & Hecla Mining Company which was the industrial
leader in Copper Mining in the late 1800's and early 1900's and employed thousands
of local miners and support personnel. When the Copper mines were closed
and the immense infrastructure of buildings and industrial sites were taken
down, all the steel was recycled. No one at the time realized the potential
beauty of these "Granite Mill Blocks". These blocks of solid stone were
designed into SO many of C&H's machines as giant "washers" for spreading
out the incredible forces which the foundations needed to absorb.
In their rough state, they look like just giant blocks of concrete, but only a
trained eye noticed their incredible value. They literally were going to
be thrown into Lake Superior as break walls!!!! Research has placed their
original quarry site to be in some of the country's first commercial granite
quarry's located in the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts, namely the
Rockport Granite Company. These first quarry's only operated in the late 1800's
and closed in the early 1900's, all of which are filled with water now.
